BIP-177 Sparks Debate: Redefining Bitcoin’s Base Unit for Simplicity

A new proposal, Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 177 (BIP-177), has stirred discussions within the Bitcoin community by suggesting a redefinition of Bitcoin’s base unit. Currently, 1 Bitcoin (BTC) equals 100 million satoshis (sats). BIP-177 proposes eliminating the term “satoshi” and instead defining the smallest unit as “1 bitcoin,” effectively making 1 BTC equal to 100 million bitcoins.

Proponents argue that this change would simplify Bitcoin transactions, especially for newcomers. Displaying amounts in whole numbers (e.g., 10,000 bitcoins instead of 0.0001 BTC) could make understanding and using Bitcoin more intuitive. Jack Dorsey, CEO of Block Inc., supports the proposal, stating that terms like “sats” can be confusing for new users.

However, critics express concerns about potential confusion and the dilution of Bitcoin’s brand. Some worry that redefining units could mislead users about Bitcoin’s scarcity, as the total supply would appear to increase from 21 million BTC to 2.1 quadrillion bitcoins, despite no actual change in supply.

It’s important to note that BIP-177 does not alter Bitcoin’s underlying protocol or total supply. The proposal focuses solely on how units are displayed in user interfaces. If adopted, wallets and exchanges would need to update their systems to reflect the new unit definition.
